(WO) — Aker BP and DrillDocs are expanding deployment of computer vision technology designed to improve drilling performance and reduce nonproductive time across offshore operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
The latest installation of DrillDocs’ CleanSight digital shaker surveillance system has been completed aboard Odfjell Drilling’s Deepsea Nordkapp rig, marking the next phase of Aker BP’s rollout of the technology across its contracted drilling fleet.
The deployment follows a successful trial aboard the Noble Integrator rig, where the system helped reduce nonproductive circulating time and improve early detection of drill cuttings and cavings that can signal developing wellbore instability.
According to DrillDocs, the technology combines camera systems, computer vision and data analytics to monitor drilling returns in real time, providing crews with early warning of drilling and hole-cleaning issues before they escalate into more costly operational problems.
“Our groundbreaking computer vision technology captures and interprets vital information that can lead to improved drilling efficiency and safety,” said Calvin Holt, founder and CEO of DrillDocs. “By combining advances in camera technology and data science, we’re able to measure hole cleaning efficiency and detect drilling and wellbore stability issues as they are occurring.”
The company said the system allows drilling teams to identify potential pack-off conditions and other wellbore problems earlier, helping reduce the risk of stuck pipe incidents and associated recovery costs.
The expanded deployment is part of a broader technology framework agreement between Aker BP and DrillDocs focused on developing and implementing digital drilling solutions.
“This agreement underscores Aker BP’s ambition to lead the industry’s transformation through safe, efficient and low-emission operations,” said Tommy Sigmundstad, senior vice president drilling & wells, supply chain & logistics at Aker BP. “By combining advanced camera technology with AI, we aim to elevate drilling performance and safety while accelerating our digital journey.”
The companies said the framework is expected to support additional technology development initiatives beyond the current CleanSight deployment program.
