Welcome to the Points Pro, where I answer your credit cards and travel rewards questions each week. If you have a question you’d like answered, you can submit it here.
This week, reader Joey asks:
Which credit cards earn more points, Citi cards or Amex cards?
(This question has been edited for clarity and brevity.)
Citi and American Express issue so many cards that it’s not practical to determine which is better in general. However, when you look at specific card types, it’s easier to identify standout options.
We don’t have the capacity to compare every card from these banks in a single article, so let’s take a look at how rewarding the top options are for a few key types of credit cards.
Citi cards vs. Amex cards
Flat-rate cards
The gold standard for flat-rate rewards credit cards is 2% cash back everywhere or 2X points everywhere, and the Citi Double Cash® Card is one of the best cards in this class. If I wanted to earn the most rewards on all purchases without having to consider bonus categories, this is the card I’d get.
Not only does it earn 2% cash back on all purchases (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay your bill), but it also features a generous intro APR offer on balance transfers. And while it’s technically a cash-back card, you earn the cash back as Citi ThankYou® Points. That means you can transfer your rewards to any of Citi’s partner travel programs.
What makes the Citi Double Cash® Card special is that it sits near the top of its class in several categories. It is an excellent option if you want flat-rate rewards, a balance transfer intro-APR or no annual fee.
- Balance transfers get a long intro APR
- Generous flat-rate cash-back rewards structure
- Earns transferable rewards
- No annual fee
- It has a foreign transaction fee
- Intro APR only applies to balance transfer
- Points transfer ratios are reduced compared to premium cards
Highlights
Highlights shown here are provided by the issuer and have not been reviewed by CNBC Select’s editorial staff.
- Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. This bonus offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.
- Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. To earn cash back, pay at least the minimum due on time. Plus, earn 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked with Citi Travel.
- Balance Transfer Only Offer: 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months. After that, the variable APR will be 17.49% – 27.49%, based on your creditworthiness.
- Balance Transfers do not earn cash back. Intro APR does not apply to purchases.
- If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on your purchases unless you pay your entire balance (including balance transfers) by the due date each month.
- There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).
Balance transfer fee
There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. A balance transfer fee of 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum) applies if completed after 4 months of account opening.
Foreign transaction fee
Amex doesn’t offer a flat-rate consumer credit card, but if you’re a small business owner, there are two options that compete with the Citi Double Cash: The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card and The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.
The Blue Business Cash isn’t quite as valuable as the Citi Double Cash because it only earns 2% cash back on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year (then 1% back). Even if that annual cap won’t limit your earnings, the Double Cash also provides the flexibility of transferring rewards, which this card doesn’t offer.
If you’re interested in travel rewards, the Blue Business Plus offers better transfer ratios than the Citi Double Cash, which has reduced transfer ratios compared to Citi ThankYou® cards with an annual fee. However, it only earns 2X points on the first $50,000 in purchases each year (then 1X points).
The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is a great option if you’re starting a business because it’s affordable, earns flexible travel rewards and offers an intro-APR on purchases for a year.
- Valuable intro-APR offer for purchases for 12 months
- Earns flexible rewards you can transfer to 20+ airline and hotel loyalty programs
- No annual fee
- Bonus rewards for purchases are capped
- Few useful travel insurance benefits

Bonus-category cards
Many credit cards offer enhanced rewards for the most popular categories of purchases. If you’re not earning 3X or more on gas, groceries or dining, you’re missing out on additional value for these common expenses.
Amex: Ultra rewarding with limits
If you want to earn the most on specific purchases such as dining, groceries, streaming services or gas, then Amex has your back.
The American Express® Gold Card earns 4X points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X points) and 4X points on dining worldwide (on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X points). So with a single card, you could cover two of the most popular purchase categories.
The American Express Gold Card is great for earning valuable Membership Rewards® points at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets. Membership Rewards® points transfer to many of the top airline and hotel loyalty programs, which makes this card one of the best options for earning travel rewards.
- You can earn $400+ in dining and rideshare credits every year (Enrollment required for select benefits mentioned)
- Exceptionally rewarding for eligible restaurant and U.S. supermarket purchases

On a per-dollar basis, Amex cards are among the most rewarding for streaming services, groceries, dining and more. However, the annual fees for the top cards can be significant, and the best rates of return tend to have annual spending caps.
Citi: A simpler path to bonus rewards
Several Citi credit cards provide a simpler path to maximizing your rewards.
The Citi Strata℠ Card earns an uncapped 3X points at supermarkets, gas stations and EV charging, transit and on a category of your choice (including fitness clubs, streaming services, live entertainment and more). You’ll earn Citi ThankYou® Points with this card, which also transfer to travel partners.
The uncapped earnings give it an advantage over the Blue Cash Everyday. However, the redemption rate for cash back is a paltry 0.5 cents per point (unless you pair it with another card like the Double Cash, which can boost these redemptions to 1 cent per point). So it’s not a strong option if you prefer to use rewards for statement credits.
The Citi Strata℠ Card is a solid rewards credit card that earns in several everyday spending categories, with no annual fee.
- No annual fee
- Customizable earnings category
- Earns transferable rewards
- Has foreign transaction fees
- Fewer built-in benefits

Premium cards
Luxury credit cards are appealing for their premium perks, such as airport lounge access, complimentary elite status and a vast assortment of credits. The trade-off is that these cards are more expensive, typically featuring annual fees of $500+.
