If you’re opening a business bank account, a generous sign-up bonus can provide an immediate boost to your cash flow. Many banks are offering cash incentives worth hundreds of dollars to attract new business clients.
Earning an account bonus usually requires maintaining a minimum balance, making qualifying deposits and completing a certain number of transactions. While these promotions can be highly valuable, it’s important to look at the account holistically, beyond just the short-term gain. Are you losing most of your bonus to fees? Does the account serve the needs of your business?
CNBC Select has chosen the best business bank account bonuses and promotions based on cash incentives, eligibility requirements, account features, user benefits and other criteria. For more on how we made our selections, read our methodology.

What’s a business bank account and who can open one?
A business bank account is used for business transactions rather than personal finances. There are business checking and savings accounts, as well as merchant service accounts to accept credit and debit card payments from customers.
You don’t need an LLC to open a business checking or savings account: If you have substantial self-employment income, most banks will let you open an account as a sole proprietor with a Social Security number or EIN, a government ID and your business name (which can be your own legal name).
That’s just one of several options, though. Others include:
- Member-managed or manager-managed LLC
- Partnership
- Corporation (C corporation or S corporation)
- Nonprofit organization
- Freelancer or independent contractor business
What’s a business bank account bonus?
A business bank account bonus is usually a one-time cash reward given to new customers who open an eligible business checking or savings account and complete qualifying activities, like depositing a minimum amount of new money and maintaining a balance for a specified time.
You may also have to complete a certain number of transactions, such as debit card purchases or ACH deposits.
How do business account bonuses differ from personal account bonuses?
Qualifying for a business bank account isn’t very different from opening a personal account, but how you earn the bonus is: Personal checking account promotions often require direct deposit or a minimum opening balance. For business accounts, banks want to see positive cash flow — you may need to maintain an average balance for a number of weeks, deposit a certain dollar amount or complete a number of qualifying transactions, like ACH transfers, debit card purchases or mobile check deposits.
What to consider before claiming a business account bonus
Before you try to take advantage of a sign-up bonus, there are several things to keep in mind:
- You must have a legitimate business. Opening a business bank account without genuine business activity can be considered a violation of terms and result in the account being closed before you receive the bonus.
- You must be a new customer. Bonuses are designed to attract new customers, so existing business account holders are usually ineligible. Many banks also exclude applicants who have closed a business account within the past 12 months, although you may still qualify if you have other products with the bank, like a personal checking account or credit card.
- You must meet the bonus requirements. Most promotions require you to complete specific qualifying activities, such as making a minimum deposit, maintaining a minimum balance or completing a certain number of transactions within a set time frame.
- The account has to suit your business. A large sign-up bonus isn’t worth much if the account doesn’t meet your long-term needs. Before signing up, compare fees, balance requirements, transaction limits, integrations with accounting software, digital banking tools, cash deposit options, customer support and other features.
- Bonuses are taxable. In most cases, the IRS considers business bank account bonuses taxable income. If your bonus is $600 or more, the bank may send you a Form 1099-INT or Form 1099-MISC. But even if you don’t receive a tax form, you’re generally required to report the income. Keep records of the payment and consult a tax professional if you have questions about reporting it on your business tax return.
Business bank account bonus pros and cons

- Business checking bonuses are often larger than incentives for personal accounts.
- A bonus can help offset startup or operating costs.

Cons
- Qualifying usually requires meeting strict deposit, balance or transaction requirements.
- Most offers are limited to new business customers.
- Monthly fees are higher on business accounts, which can reduce the value of the bonus.
- You may have to keep the account open for several months to receive the bonus.
- Business bank account bonuses are generally considered taxable income.
How to open a business bank account
To open an account, you’ll typically need to provide:
- Two forms of identification, including a government-issued photo ID
- Your business address and contact information
- Your Social Security number (for sole proprietors) or your business’s Employer Identification Number
- Business formation documents, such as articles of organization or incorporation
- A business license, DBA certificate or other documentation
Individual banks may have additional requirements based on the type of account you’re opening or your business structure.
FAQs
How long does it take to get a business bank account bonus?
Each bank sets its own parameters for business account bonuses, but in most cases, you must maintain a minimum balance for 60 to 90 days before the payment is deposited in your account.
Can I close the account after I get my bonus?
Yes, in most cases you can close an account after receiving a sign-up bonus, but you should check the terms to make sure. In some cases, closing the account within a certain time frame can result in an early closure fee or the bonus being clawed back.
