(WO) — Suriname’s offshore oil and gas sector is gaining momentum as TotalEnergies advances the GranMorgu development, PETRONAS builds on exploration success in Block 52 and additional acreage opens to investment across the Guyana-Suriname basin.

TotalEnergies is progressing the GranMorgu deepwater development in Block 58, which is targeting first oil in 2028. The project will develop the Sapakara and Krabdagu fields, which together contain an estimated 760 MMbbl of recoverable resources.
GranMorgu will use an FPSO with production capacity of 220,000 bpd. In July, TotalEnergies awarded Halliburton a contract covering integrated drilling and completion services for the project, including drilling, well completions and digital workflows.
The development represents a major step toward establishing Suriname as an offshore oil producer and could provide infrastructure to support additional development opportunities in the basin.
Exploration activity is also continuing elsewhere offshore Suriname. PETRONAS announced the Sloanea-2 gas discovery in Block 52 in June, adding to previous exploration successes including Caiman-1, Roystonea-1 and Roystonea-2. Collectively, discoveries in the block are estimated to contain more than 1 Bboe, according to the release.
Recent geological research has also identified what was described as an oil-generating “sweet spot” extending toward Suriname’s offshore acreage, including Block 52, potentially supporting further exploration across the area.
Meanwhile, state-owned Staatsolie is seeking additional investment through its open-door licensing program, offering more than 70,000 sq km of offshore acreage across five exploration areas.
The activity comes as the broader Guyana-Suriname basin continues to emerge as a major deepwater petroleum province. While neighboring Guyana is already ramping up large-scale offshore production, Suriname is moving toward its first offshore oil production through GranMorgu while operators continue to evaluate additional discoveries and exploration prospects.
