(WO) — U.S. Steel has received the final air permit needed to advance construction of a $475 million quench-and-tempering facility in Alabama designed to expand tubular capacity for major U.S. oil and gas basins.
The new facility at U.S. Steel’s Fairfield Tubular Operations will add in-house capacity for heat-treated tubular products used in oil and gas exploration and production. The company said the expansion will support customers operating in the Permian, Eagle Ford, Haynesville and Marcellus basins.
Initial construction began in July, and the quench-and-tempering (Q&T) facility is expected to reach full production in 2029.
Quench and tempering is a two-stage heat-treatment process used to increase the strength and durability of steel. U.S. Steel said the process will improve the performance of its pipe products in demanding E&P applications while reducing the risk of cracking.
“This project enhances our product offering for a strong domestic energy supply,” said Kevin Lewis, U.S. Steel executive vice president, chief financial officer and head of Tubular Solutions. “With the final permit in place, we can move forward with an investment that strengthens our competitive position in one of the most important energy markets in North America.”
The Q&T project is part of a broader modernization of U.S. Steel’s Fairfield tubular operations. The company announced a separate $75 million investment in 2025 for a new Premium Thread Line designed to expand pipe and tube threading capacity.
Together, the two projects represent approximately $550 million of investment at the Alabama facility. The broader campus modernization also includes a new training facility, warehouse and other infrastructure upgrades.
