(WO) — INEOS Energy has launched commercial operations at the Greensand CO₂ storage facility offshore Denmark, establishing what the company says is the European Union’s first full-scale site for permanent offshore carbon storage.
Greensand is led by INEOS Energy in partnership with Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden). The project’s first commercial phase has capacity to store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, with potential expansion to 4–8 million tonnes per year.
The project will initially source CO₂ primarily from Danish biomethane plants. After capture, the CO₂ is liquefied and transported by truck to a dedicated terminal at the Port of Esbjerg before being shipped offshore aboard Carbon Destroyer 1, a purpose-built CO₂ carrier.
The CO₂ is then injected into the depleted Nini West oil field approximately 250 km offshore Denmark and about 1,800 meters beneath the seabed for permanent geological storage.
“For years, CCS in Europe has been defined by plans, targets and ambitions. Today, Greensand brings the EU’s first full-scale CO₂ storage site and value chain into operation,” said David Bucknall, CEO of INEOS Energy.
INEOS said the initial use of readily available biogenic CO₂ will allow the full carbon capture, transportation and storage value chain to operate while larger industrial capture projects continue to develop.
“Greensand starts with biogenic CO₂, but its significance reaches far beyond that first step,” said Mads Gade, CEO of INEOS Energy Europe. “We are ready to expand capacity to receive CO₂ from industries across Europe.”
Denmark’s King Frederik X officially opened the facility Sept. 18 at the Port of Esbjerg. INEOS said the project could ultimately provide permanent storage for captured emissions from industrial facilities across Europe as its capacity expands.
