U.S. markets ended slightly lower on Tuesday as traders seemed reluctant to make significant moves ahead of the release of closely watched consumer price inflation data on Wednesday. The street had expected the consumer confidence index to inch up to 90.0 from 89.4 originally reported for the previous month. Besides, the Labor Department released a report showing the number of job openings in the US fell by 256,000 to 7.079 million in August 2026, the lowest in five months, compared to an upwardly revised 7.335 million in July and forecasts of 7.23 million.
