(WO) – The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that Alaska’s North Slope holds 96 Tcf of technically recoverable, undiscovered natural gas. That’s nearly three times the region’s roughly 35 Tcf of proven gas reserves, according to the agency’s latest assessment.
“The U.S. economy and our way of life depend on energy, and USGS natural gas assessments point to resources that industry hasn’t discovered yet. In this case, we estimate there are significant undiscovered gas resources in the North Slope of Alaska,” said USGS Director Ned Mamula.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the estimate shows the importance of understanding the North Slope’s resources. He said Alaska’s gas “can supply affordable, reliable, secure energy to Americans” and U.S. allies for generations. The Interior Department said the assessment supports Executive Order 14153, Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential, which President Trump signed on his first day in office.
USGS assessments feed into land-use and resource management plans by agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management. Industry uses them as background for planning detailed exploration.
