“Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful,” said the great Warren Buffett is his classic Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letter in 1986.
This week’s tech sell-off might provide an opportunity to put that adage to work, particularly if you’re inclined to use options.
Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Q3 2026 earnings report triggered a historic gap down; the stock fell over 12% to $285, shaving nearly $500 billion in market cap. Despite a 103% surge in Cloud revenue that points to underlying fundamental strength, the market focused on the EPS miss ($2.12 vs. $3.02 estimate) and negative free cash flow (AI capital expenditures are relentless!). For options traders, this environment sets up a compelling range-bound play via a short strangle, capitalizing on inflated implied volatility and a deadlocked near-term outlook.
While the core business remains fundamentally intact, two near-term anchors are likely to suppress any rapid recovery. First, the sell-side reaction was swift: several firms either downgraded the stock, cut price targets, or lowered forward estimates. Historically, stocks that absorb a wave of downgrades underperform or trade sideways over the next 30 days as institutional repositioning caps upside momentum. (Fodder for another article, but this is one of the most predictive “factors to watch”)
Second, the technical posture is severely damaged. Alphabet was already weak before the print, and this earnings gap only confirmed the breakdown. With the RSI plunging into the low 20s and the MACD accelerating its sell signal, the technical overhead is heavy. However, extreme oversold conditions at the bottom of the 52-week range ($270.70) should stem a total freefall.

Strategy Setup: To exploit this anticipated 30-day chop, a short strangle lets traders collect premium while leaving room for consolidation.
Target Expiration: Standard December 18, 2026 (capturing the 30- to 45-day window for post-downgrade underperformance).
Trade Dynamics & Risks This position profits if GOOGL trades strictly between $250 and $325 through expiration, allowing time decay (theta) and the post-event volatility crush (vega) to erode the options’ value. Given the stock’s current trajectory, the main risk is a broader market sell-off dragging GOOGL below the $250 short strike, but that would be a reasonably attractive entry price. Conversely, an unexpected catalyst would need to drive shares past $310 to threaten the upside, which remains improbable given the technical damage and Wall Street’s renewed skepticism over Alphabet’s AI spending bill.
By the way, you’ll notice that the probability of profit on this trade is quite high; both the short call and short put each have a probability of profit close to 90%. Incidentally, the APY on the table below does not include interest you may receive on cash/collateral in the account in support of the trade.
