(WO) – ADNOC has taken a final investment decision (FID) on the Ruwais Diyab unconventional gas development in Abu Dhabi, its first large-scale unconventional gas project. The company announced the decision Nov. 2 at ADIPEC. Ruwais Diyab is designed to deliver 345 MMscfd of raw gas from 2029 over a 25-year period, and ADNOC said output could eventually reach up to 1 Bcfd.
The gas will be processed on site and fed into the UAE’s gas network through new pipeline infrastructure. ADNOC said the added supply will strengthen domestic gas availability, support industrial growth and back its LNG export ambitions, including ADNOC Gas’ ability to meet rising demand at home and abroad.
“Ruwais Diyab is ADNOC’s first large-scale unconventional gas development and this FID marks an important milestone in unlocking Abu Dhabi’s vast gas resources,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, ADNOC managing director and group CEO, and UAE minister of industry and advanced technology. “This investment will strengthen the UAE’s energy security, support industrial growth and advance ADNOC’s integrated global gas growth strategy to responsibly meet rising demand at home and abroad.”
ADNOC Onshore will deliver the project under a design-build-operate (DBO) model. The FID follows a program of technical studies, field testing and subsurface analysis aimed at reducing development risk. The company said the development will use AI-enabled drilling and completion technologies and is intended to create a scalable platform for a future unconventional gas business.
According to ADNOC, the UAE holds the world’s seventh-largest gas reserves, with 298 Tcf of conventional gas reserves and 160 Tcf of unconventional gas resources. The company is drawing on U.S. shale expertise to develop more of those resources and expand its LNG portfolio.
