New York City Mayor Eric Adams is expected to make what is billed as an “important campaign announcement” on Friday afternoon.
The event was publicly disclosed after The New York Times reported that close advisors to President Donald Trump have been working on a plan to nominate Adams as U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
If Adams drops his long-shot bid to win re-election as New York’s mayor, it could boost the chances of Andrew Cuomo in the race.
Zohran Mamdani is the Democratic Party’s nominee in the race, and is considered the clear front-runner.
Trump has said he would like two candidates to drop out of the contest to make it easier for a remaining challenger to defeat the democratic socialist Mamdani.
