(WO) – Halliburton has introduced its RangeStar™ geothermal well spacing and intercept service, a magnetic ranging solution designed to improve well placement accuracy, reduce operational uncertainty and support automation in complex geothermal drilling environments.
The new service is part of Halliburton’s RangeStar family of magnetic ranging technologies and is engineered to support geothermal operators with faster ranging determination, improved detection distances and integrated well placement capabilities. According to the company, the system can reduce ranging decision time from hours to minutes, while supporting detection distances of up to 130 meters and improving accuracy across a range of depths and formations.
Configured as an all-inclusive bottomhole assembly, the RangeStar geothermal service combines short- and long-distance detection in a single configuration. This approach reduces the need for multiple tools traditionally required for ranging operations, helping simplify workflows, lower execution risk and enhance subsurface precision during geothermal well construction.
Halliburton said the service enables operators to acquire higher-quality data closer to the bit while maintaining efficient hole cleaning and stable drilling conditions. The technology is designed for use in high-temperature, complex geothermal environments where accurate well spacing and intercept capabilities are critical to development success.
The RangeStar geothermal well spacing and intercept service integrates with Halliburton’s iStar® intelligent drilling and logging platform, the LOGIX™ automation and remote operations suite, and the iCruise® intelligent rotary steerable system. The integrated workflow supports connected drilling operations and provides a pathway toward greater automation and remote execution in geothermal projects.
Halliburton stated that the new offering is intended to strengthen well execution and positioning in next-generation geothermal developments, as operators pursue deeper and hotter resources to expand firm, low-carbon energy supply.
