Welcome to the Points Pro, where I answer your credit card and travel rewards questions each week. If you have a question you’d like answered, you can submit it here.
This week, an anonymous CNBC Select reader asks:
Can you use United MileagePlus miles to book a round-the-world ticket? If not, what’s the best way to buy one?
This question has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Unfortunately, United Airlines no longer offers round-the-world award tickets, so earning miles with a United℠ Explorer Card (see rates and fees) or other Chase co-branded United credit cards won’t help you book this type of ticket.
However, you can still book round-the-world itineraries with other airlines. Plus, there are frequent flyer programs with features that can help you book this type of trip, even if it’s not an official round-the-world ticket.
The United℠ Explorer Card is worth it even if you only fly with United Airlines once or twice a year because you can take advantage of two United Club℠ passes per year when the primary cardmember or authorized user is traveling and you can receive free checked bags.
- No annual fee for the first year
- Unlocks upgrades for elite members on award flights
- Two free United Club airport lounge passes every year
- Valuable United Airlines perks, such as in-flight purchase discounts and the ability to earn elite status credit through credit card spending
- First checked bag free benefit requires you to pay for the flight with the card
- United Airlines has a dynamic award chart which can limit the value and flexibility of your miles

You can also buy a round-the-world flight with cash. The Star Alliance — which includes United — and oneworld alliance both offer this type of itinerary. There are also third-party travel providers that offer round-the-world booking services, such as AirTreks.
When you’re booking this type of flight with cash, points or miles, it’s important to review the fine print for that program’s rules. Keep an eye out for limitations such as:
- Direction of travel
- Number of stops
- Number of flights
- Total distance
- Time you have to complete your travel
- Change or cancellation policies
Use programs that offer free stopovers
In lieu of booking an official round-the-world flight, you might be able to piece together an itinerary that works for you. Loyalty programs that offer free or low-cost stopovers on awards can help you stretch your rewards further. A stopover is typically defined as a connection of at least 24 hours.
My favorite programs for stopover awards are Atmos Rewards (the program of Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines) and Air Canada Aeroplan. Atmos allows one stopover of up to 14 days per one-way flight on eligible international itineraries. With Aeroplan, it costs only 5,000 miles to add one stopover of up to 45 days outside of the U.S. and Canada per direction of travel to an international award flight.
The best part is that it’s easy to earn miles for both programs. You can transfer Bilt Points to Atmos at a 1:1 ratio, and Bank of America issues three Atmos Rewards credit cards. The Bilt Palladium Card (see rates and fees) and Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® both offer valuable welcome bonuses that can quickly boost your Atmos rewards balance.
The Bilt Palladium Card earns 2X Bilt Points on everyday purchases, and your choice of up to 1.25X on rent and mortgage payments

- Simple flat-rate rewards earning
- Can earn up to 1.25X points on rent and mortgage payments
- Additional steps for no-fee rent payments
