Welcome to the Points Pro, where I answer your credit cards and travel rewards questions each week. If you have a question you’d like answered, you can submit it here.
This week, reader Meera asks:
Which credit card has primary car rental insurance, lounge access and earns two points per dollar?
This question has been edited for clarity.
Meera is in luck because you can get primary rental car insurance, airport lounge access and 2X rewards on all purchases with a single credit card. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers all of that and more. It is a premium credit card with a $395 annual fee, but perks like its annual $300 Capital One Travel credit and a 10,000-point anniversary bonus (worth $100 in travel) make it easy to justify.
I had this card for years, and it was my go-to for all the benefits Meera wants. But it typically requires an excellent credit score to qualify, so it’s hard to get. Plus, the airport lounge access rules changed in 2025, and it’s no longer a good choice if you want to bring along guests, which is why I ended up closing the card.
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is a premium credit card with a myriad of benefits and a lower annual fee than other high-end cards with similar features.
- Annual $300 credit for bookings through Capital One Travel
- 10,000 bonus miles after every card anniversary

Let’s look at other (lower-cost) ways to get these benefits, in case the cost or perks don’t quite match what you’re looking for.
Flat-rate credit cards with rental car insurance and lounge access
How much lounge access do you need?
You get unlimited complimentary access to Priority Pass™ lounges and Capital One Lounge and Landing locations with the Capital One Venture X after enrollment. However, you’ll pay $35 per guest for Priority Pass™ lounges and need to spend $75,000 on the card in a calendar year to bring up to two complimentary guests to Capital One Lounges or one complimentary guest to Capital One Landings. Otherwise, you pay $45 per guest per visit to Capital One Lounges or Landings (guests under 18 years old cost $25 and children under two enter for free).
If you frequently travel with family or other companions, it makes the Venture X card’s lounge access complicated. In this situation, you may want an entirely different card for lounge access or, at the very least, a complimentary card.
The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature Card is one option that’s great if you don’t regularly travel with guests and only occasionally want guest access. It has no annual fee and comes with Priority Pass membership. However, you’ll only get four complimentary lounge visits per year ($35 per person per additional visit) for yourself and guests.
The Chime Card™1 could also help, especially if you are having trouble getting approved for other cards because it doesn’t require a credit check; you just need to have a Chime® Checking Account2. If you qualify for Chime Prime3 (have $3,000 in direct deposits per month), you can enroll to receive a Priority Pass lounge membership with two complimentary visits per year.
- 5% cash backrewards on category of choice each month for **Chime Primemembers. Prime eligibility is unlocked with$3,000+ in qualifying direct deposits.

- Statement credit offers worth up to twice what the annual fee costs
- Elite status perks for hotels and rental cars (Enrollment required for select benefits mentioned)
- High annual fee
- Many statement credit offers are complicated and are earned in increments or limited to specific purchases

You can save by meeting your needs with multiple cards
You can have airport lounge access, primary rental car insurance and 2X rewards everywhere with no annual fee, but you’ll need multiple cards to get all those benefits. And there are caveats to certain perks, like the Altitude Connect’s limited lounge access.
For earning 2X points everywhere, the Citi Double Cash® Card fits the bill. It earns up to 2% cash back on every purchase (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay your bill), and the cash back is earned as Citi ThankYou® Points, which means you can transfer the points to all of Citi’s travel partners.
What makes the Citi Double Cash® Card special is that it sits near the top of its class in several categories. It is an excellent option if you want flat-rate rewards, a balance transfer intro-APR or no annual fee.
- Balance transfers get a long intro APR
- Generous flat-rate cash-back rewards structure
- Earns transferable rewards
- No annual fee
- It has a foreign transaction fee
- Intro APR only applies to balance transfer
- Points transfer ratios are reduced compared to premium cards
Highlights
Highlights shown here are provided by the issuer and have not been reviewed by CNBC Select’s editorial staff.
- Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. This bonus offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.
- Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. To earn cash back, pay at least the minimum due on time. Plus, earn 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked with Citi Travel.
- Balance Transfer Only Offer: 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months. After that, the variable APR will be 18.24% – 28.49%, based on your creditworthiness.
- Balance Transfers do not earn cash back. Intro APR does not apply to purchases.
- If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on your purchases unless you pay your entire balance (including balance transfers) by the due date each month.
- There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).
Balance transfer fee
There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. A balance transfer fee of 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum) applies if completed after 4 months of account opening.
Foreign transaction fee
However, the transfer ratios for the Double Cash are reduced unless you have a Citi credit card with an annual fee, like the Citi Strata Premier®Card (see rates and fees). So you’re not earning the same 2X transferable miles you’d get with the Venture X.
The One Key™ Card has no annual fee and primary rental car protection for rentals in the U.S. and abroad (secondary coverage for New York residents and not available in certain countries). It covers accidents and theft for up to $50,000 when you charge the entire eligible rental to your card.
But the One Key Card earns OneKeyCash, the rewards program for Hotels.com, Expedia and Vrbo. If those brands don’t appeal to you, you may not want the card just for its rental car coverage.
