Welcome to the Points Pro, where I answer your credit cards and travel rewards questions each week. If you have a question you’d like answered, you can submit it here.
This week, CNBC Select editor Emily asks:
I have to buy a new dishwasher soon, and unfortunately, the timing is such that I can’t get any promotional deals on the appliance. Which type of card do you suggest I use for this big-ticket item?
This question has been edited for brevity and clarity.
When I have a big purchase I can plan for, I like to open a new credit card with a big limited-time offer. But if you need to make the purchase now, that plan may not work.
A new credit card can take up to 10 days to arrive in the mail, and expedited shipping or instant card access aren’t always available.
Getting a new credit card may not fit into your plans right now, so let’s focus on how to maximize the cards you currently have.
Best credit card to use for buying appliances
Where you buy the appliance can affect your rewards
When it comes to earning rewards, where you buy the appliance matters more than what you are buying.
A store’s merchant category code is what card issuers use to classify purchases. If you buy a candy bar at a gas station, it could qualify as a gas purchase. But buy it at a grocery store, and it’ll most likely earn rewards as a grocery purchase.
Appliance stores don’t typically fall into a category that earns bonus rewards. And stores like Walmart and Costco don’t usually earn bonus rewards as grocery purchases unless you have a co-branded card with the retailer. That means you’ll probably earn 1% cash back or 1X points on the purchase, unless you have a credit card that earns 2% back (like the Citi Double Cash® Card which offers 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchase) or a store card that offers a discount on this type of purchase.
What makes the Citi Double Cash® Card special is that it sits near the top of its class in several categories. It is an excellent option if you want flat-rate rewards, a balance transfer intro-APR or no annual fee.
- Balance transfers get a long intro APR
- Generous flat-rate cash-back rewards structure
- Earns transferable rewards
- No annual fee
- It has a foreign transaction fee
- Intro APR only applies to balance transfer
- Points transfer ratios are reduced compared to premium cards
Highlights
Highlights shown here are provided by the issuer and have not been reviewed by CNBC Select’s editorial staff.
- Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. This bonus offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.
- Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. To earn cash back, pay at least the minimum due on time. Plus, earn 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked with Citi Travel.
- Balance Transfer Only Offer: 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months. After that, the variable APR will be 18.49% – 28.74%, based on your creditworthiness.
- Balance Transfers do not earn cash back. Intro APR does not apply to purchases.
- If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on your purchases unless you pay your entire balance (including balance transfers) by the due date each month.
- There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).
Balance transfer fee
There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. A balance transfer fee of 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum) applies if completed after 4 months of account opening.
Foreign transaction fee
Maximizing rewards may not be the most important thing to focus on with an expensive purchase like an appliance. I wouldn’t suggest choosing where you buy a dishwasher based on where you’ll earn the biggest return; just pick the card that works best for the store you end up choosing. Credit card rewards will typically be less valuable than what you could save by price shopping.
Consider a credit card with shopping protections
If you’re worried about the appliance breaking down and want extra peace of mind without paying for it, your credit card might be able to help.
Certain credit cards come with built-in shopping benefits such as return protection, purchase protection and extended warranty coverage. These perks are most common with cards that charge an annual fee, and premium credit cards (with larger annual fees) typically offer enhanced protections.
Review the benefits each of your cards offers. In particular, take a look at the fine print and compare your credit card’s insurance to the extended warranty or other protections offered by the store. If you get extended warranty coverage from your credit card at no extra cost, then you won’t have to purchase that type of policy.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) offers some of the best insurance you can get from a card with an annual fee under $100. Its extended warranty protection covers up to $10,000 per item (up to $50,000 per account) and extends the original manufacturer’s U.S. warranty by a year on warranties of three years or less. This protection applies on top of a warranty you purchase (or the store provides), as long as the coverage doesn’t exceed three years.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card packs a punch for a $95 annual fee card, offering annual travel credits, comprehensive travel protections, flexible rewards and more.
- You can transfer rewards to all of Chase’s travel partners including World of Hyatt, Southwest Rapid Rewards and many more
- Long list of travel and shopping protections
- Annual Chase Travel hotel credit
- Has an annual fee
- Requires a high credit score
