(WO) — Global energy discussions at the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial in Houston highlighted permitting, infrastructure and supply-chain challenges that could have significant implications for the oilfield services sector, according to the Energy Workforce & Technology Council (EWTC).
The Sept. 14–16 gathering brought together government officials and energy industry executives to discuss rising energy demand, infrastructure development, regulatory processes and energy security. EWTC President Molly Determan attended alongside representatives from major oilfield service and equipment companies.
Industry participants included executives and representatives from SLB, NOV, Halliburton, Patterson-UTI, Forum Energy Technologies, Oil States International and Baker Hughes. EWTC said the discussions repeatedly focused on what will be required to increase energy production and move projects from development into operation.
Permitting and regulatory efficiency emerged as key themes, including during a G20 Regulatory Efficiency Symposium hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. According to EWTC, more predictable approval processes could support investment across drilling, completions, manufacturing, pipelines and other energy infrastructure.
Energy security also featured prominently as disruptions to global crude flows continue to put pressure on transportation routes and infrastructure. The discussions emphasized resilient production and diversified infrastructure as governments assess how to meet future energy demand.
Critical mineral supply chains and water management were also addressed. The EPA announced a G20 Water Reuse Initiative aimed at expanding the use of treated water for industrial, agricultural and energy applications, an area with direct implications for oilfield water management and recycling.
EWTC said the discussions underscore the role of oilfield services companies in providing the equipment, technology, infrastructure and workforce needed to translate energy development plans into production.
