(WO) — Petrobras has made a second oil discovery in its ultra-deepwater Morpho exploration well offshore Brazil, encountering another oil-bearing interval in the Foz do Amazonas basin.
The latest discovery was made in the Morpho well (1-BRSA-1405-APS), located in block FZA-M-59 off the coast of Amapá, in water depths of approximately 2,886 meters.
Petrobras continued drilling the well following its initial oil discovery in August 2026 to evaluate deeper exploration targets. The additional oil-bearing interval was identified through electrical well logs, rock indications and fluid samples collected during drilling operations.
The company said the latest discovery provides additional information about the petroleum systems and resource potential of the Foz do Amazonas basin, an emerging exploration frontier offshore northern Brazil.
Laboratory analysis of samples from the latest discovery remains underway. Petrobras said testing of samples from the previously announced August discovery has confirmed good oil quality.
Petrobras plans to complete drilling operations while continuing to evaluate the identified formations. The company has not disclosed resource estimates or announced plans for commercial development.
The discovery supports Petrobras’ broader exploration strategy, which includes evaluating new offshore frontiers to identify resources for potential future production.
