(WO) – Norway’s Borgarting Court of Appeal has ruled that Seadrill breached its contract when it redelivered the drilling rig Hercules to SFL Corp. in December 2022. In a unanimous judgment, the court ordered Seadrill subsidiaries to pay SFL’s rig-owning subsidiary about NOK 525 million ($55 million), covering compensation, late-payment interest and legal costs.
The ruling largely upholds the Oslo District Court’s February 2025 decision. The total has grown since then because of accrued interest. SFL was also awarded its full legal costs for both the district court and appeals court proceedings.
SFL said it will review the judgment in detail. Either party can appeal to the Supreme Court of Norway within one month of being served with the judgment. An appeal can go ahead only if the Supreme Court’s Appeals Selection Committee grants leave, which happens only in limited circumstances.
