(WO) — Siemens Energy has selected EST-Floattech to supply a battery system for Marco Polo Marine‘s new hybrid offshore vessel, designed to support operations in both the offshore oil and gas and wind sectors.
The Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV Plus) is under construction at Marco Polo Marine’s shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.
Under the contract, EST-Floattech will supply its Octopus High Energy battery system, providing more than 1 MWh of capacity. Siemens Energy is serving as system integrator for the vessel’s hybrid power plant, which will incorporate its BlueDrive PlusC technology.
The battery system will support hybrid propulsion and dynamic positioning (DP) operations. During DP operations, the batteries will provide spinning reserve and absorb load fluctuations, allowing fewer generators to operate while improving the efficiency of those remaining online.
Designed by Norway’s Salt Ship Design, the CSOV Plus incorporates features for both offshore wind and oil and gas operations. These include a 100-tonne active heave-compensated crane and a motion-compensated gangway capable of supporting personnel transfers in significant wave heights of up to 3 meters.
The vessel is also designed to accommodate a future battery expansion to 20 MWh, potentially enabling fully electric sailing. EST-Floattech’s modular battery architecture will allow additional capacity to be integrated into the existing battery management system.
Following delivery, the vessel will be operated by PKR Offshore, Marco Polo Marine’s Taiwan-based subsidiary. Its initial deployment will support Siemens Gamesa’s offshore wind projects in Taiwanese waters under a multiyear framework agreement.
The contract marks EST-Floattech’s first project in Singapore and Taiwan, expanding the company’s presence in the Asia-Pacific offshore energy market.
