(WO) — SLB has launched its ExaCT electrical downhole coiled tubing control system, introducing real-time electrical control, telemetry and downhole measurements to well intervention operations.
The ExaCT system replaces pressure-dependent hydraulic actuation with electrical communication and power delivery, allowing operators to communicate with, actuate and verify downhole tools throughout an intervention. The technology is designed for applications including extended-reach and multilateral wells.
The platform can support multiple services during a single run, including logging, stimulation, isolation and shifting operations. Real-time monitoring of downhole conditions also allows intervention programs to be adjusted as conditions change, potentially reducing the number of runs required.
“Completion and production teams need continuous visibility, precise control and the flexibility to perform multiple services in a single run,” said Frederik Majkut, president of Reservoir Performance at SLB. “The ExaCT system represents a fundamental shift to electrically controlled intervention.”
SLB reported significant time savings during field deployments. In one six-lateral well intervention, the system reduced total intervention time by approximately 175 hours. Operators entered each lateral in about 12 minutes, compared with six to eight hours using conventional hydraulic systems.
The operation stimulated more than 21,000 ft of reservoir contact while reducing fluid consumption by more than 3,000 bbl, according to SLB.
In separate cleanout and scale-removal applications, the ExaCT system reduced intervention time by up to 30% and fluid consumption by 20%. The system also sustained 81 hours of continuous downhole operation.
SLB said the electrical architecture provides a foundation for increasingly automated intervention workflows while giving operators greater control over reservoir access and well intervention execution.
