Credit card welcome offers often get the spotlight, but many banks are willing to pay you to open a new account, too.
Checking accounts tend to have the biggest incentives. For example, Chase Private Client CheckingSM is offering a bonus of up to $3,000, while Wells Fargo Everyday Checking includes a $325 cash bonus for eligible new customers. Some savings accounts come with bonuses as well. You can earn up to $900 by opening a Chase Savings account alongside a Chase Total Checking® account.
To qualify, you’ll typically need to meet certain requirements, such as making a minimum deposit within a set time frame or receiving qualifying direct deposits. In most cases, the money must be “new money,” meaning it comes from an external bank account or direct deposit rather than another account at the same bank.
We’ve rounded up some of the best bank account bonuses available right now, including how to qualify, when you’ll receive your bonus and when each offer expires.

How do bank account bonuses work?
Banks usually give cash bonuses to customers who have not had a deposit account within a set period, usually 12 months.
Other eligibility requirements may include:
- Opening the account before the promotion expires
- Meeting a minimum amount in direct deposits within a certain number of days of account opening
- Making a minimum number of direct deposits or performing other qualifying transactions
- Depositing “new money” (funds from outside the bank)
- Maintaining a specific balance during the promotional period
The bonus is usually deposited into your account once the promotional period has passed.
If you were thinking of opening and closing an account quickly to score the bonus, you usually have to maintain a balance for 60 to 90 days. In addition, there may be an early closure fee if you cose the account too soon after receiving the bonus.
How to choose a bank account bonus
When considering a bank account bonus, there’s more to look at than just the dollar amount.
- Minimum deposit: Is the amount you need to deposit to qualify for the bonus feasible for your budget and liquidity?
- Direct deposit requirement: Many bonuses require a direct depositof a certain amount within a specific timeline. Eligible sources include paychecks, pensions, Social Security and other income electronically deposited by an employer or outside agency.
- Account balance requirement: Most bonuses require a minimum account balance for up to 90 days or longer. Make sure you can afford to leave the required amount in the account long enough to earn the bonus.
- Fees: Consider monthly maintenance fees or other charges that could offset the bonus.
- Other account features: Ideally, this is a new account that will meet your needs for years to come. Look for benefits like earning interest, a large fee-free ATM network, convenient branch locations, mobile banking and other financial products you may use.
To estimate the annualized return of a bank account sign-up bonus, divide the bonus amount by the required deposit, then multiply by the number of holding periods in a year. This gives you an effective annualized return that you can compare with the account’s APY, monthly fees and withdrawal restrictions.
Example: A $300 bonus that requires a $10,000 minimum deposit held for three months:
- $300 ÷ $10,000 = 3% return over three months
- 12 months ÷ 3 months = 4
- 3% × 4 = 12% annualized return
Keep in mind that this is a simplified annualized return. It doesn’t account for taxes, compounding or any interest the account pays in addition to the bonus.
Regardless of the sign-up bonus, a good checking or savings account should also offer long-term value through competitive rates, low fees and features that fit your banking needs.
Are bank account bonuses worth it?
Yes, bank account bonuses are often worth it. Unlike credit card rewards, they’re typically cash incentives, so they’re easy to use. The key is making sure the effort required to receive the bonus doesn’t force you to tie up money that you need readily available or that would change your financial habits in costly ways.
A $300 bonus for opening a checking account and setting up direct deposit will give you a much higher return than you’d earn by leaving that money in a savings account for a few months.
On the other hand, if you have to leave $25,000 in a checking account earning zero interest for six months to get that $300, you should investigate how much that money could otherwise earn in a high-yield savings account or CD.
When a sign-up bonus may be worth it
Bank account bonuses can offer an excellent return for relatively little risk. Here’s when they’re worth it:
- Maintaining the account balance requirement won’t hurt your budget.
- You already receive payroll direct deposit and were planning to use a checking account anyway.
- You’re eligible for other benefits, such as an elevated APY or a discount on a loan interest rate.
When a sign-up bonus may not be worth it
A bonus may become less attractive if:
- The direct deposit or transaction requirements are difficult for you to meet.
- You have to keep a large balance that could earn more elsewhere.
- The account charges monthly fees that you can’t avoid.
Bank account bonus pros and cons
Run through this checklist before taking advantage of any new sign-up bonus:
Pros
- Free money.Even if you have to pay taxes on it, a few hundred dollars can help pay down debt or fatten your emergency fund.
- Easy to use. Unlike card rewards, which can have complicated rules and blackout dates, these bonuses are straight-up legal tender.
- May come with other perks. Some banks will offer a higher APY on the checking account or cash back on a linked credit card.
Cons
- Complicated eligibility requirements.Banks usually put strict rules in place to prevent customers from quickly opening and closing accounts. You’ll need to deposit a minimum amount and leave it in your new account for several months.
- Poor account offerings.A hefty bonus can trick you into opening an account with lots of fees, little or no interest, a limited ATM network or other red flags.
- Bonuses are taxable.Bank account bonuses are taxable income, so a slice of what you receive will have to be given to the IRS.
FAQs
How long does it take to get a bank account bonus?
Banks usually require a minimum deposit to be held in the new account for a set period before issuing your bonus, but the number of days varies by institution and offer. When possible, we’ve listed how long it will take before you can expect to receive your money.
Can I close the account after I get my bonus?
Most banks have requirements about keeping the account open for a certain amount of time. There may be a penalty for closing your account immediately after earning your cash incentive, or you may need to repay the bonus. Review your terms and conditions or ask the financial institution about its policies.
Which banks are offering bonuses for opening a checking account?
Many brick-and-mortar and online banks offer cash bonuses for opening a new checking account, including Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, SoFi and TD Bank. Most require you to receive qualifying direct deposits and keep the account open for a minimum number of days. Existing bank customers are usually excluded from these offers.
Will opening a bank account to get a bonus hurt my credit?
Unless the bank performs a hard inquiry, opening a deposit account generally does not impact your credit score. But banks often use services like ChexSystems to review an applicant’s banking history. Opening too many accounts in a short period — or “bank bonus churning” — may make it harder to qualify for new accounts.
Do I have to pay taxes on a bank account bonus?
Yes, in most cases, a cash bonus is considered taxable interest income by the IRS. If a bank gives you a $300 bonus for opening a checking account, for example, you need to report $300 as interest income on your tax return that year. If the bonus is $10 or more, your bank should send you a Form 1099-INT or 1099-MISC before taxes are due. Even if it doesn’t, though, you still need to declare the bonus. The amount of tax you need to pay on the bonus depends on your tax bracket and effective tax rate for that year.
