The US markets ended in red on Tuesday as chip stocks extended their recent losses and investors parsed mixed quarterly results from Citigroup and other major US banks. Traders seemingly remained reluctant to make significant moves ahead of the release of a closely watched report on consumer price inflation on Wednesday. The Labor Department is expected to show the annual rate of consumer price growth accelerated to 3.7 percent in September from 3.4 percent in August. The data could have a significant impact on the outlook for interest rates ahead of the Federal Reserve’s next monetary policy meeting later this month. On the economic front, a report released by the National Association of Realtors showed existing home sales in the United States rose by 1.5% from the two-year low in the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 3.99 million units in September of 2026, not too far from market expectations of 3.95 million. Total housing inventory reached 1.6 million units with the increase, 1.9% higher than the previous month to represent 4.8 months of supply under the latest sales rate.
Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 180.45 points or 0.35 percent to 51,670.10, Nasdaq fell by 41.52 points or 0.15 percent to 27,204.38, and S&P 500 was down by 1.79 points or 0.02 percent to 7,805.45.
