(Bloomberg) – Woodside Energysaid that pre-commissioning work at itsScarboroughproject off the coast of Western Australia was paused after Greenpeace protesters climbed aboard the gas platform.
“Greenpeace’s actions have triggered a significant, potentially costly and entirely avoidable response,” Woodside said in a statement. The company, Australia’s biggest natural gas exporter, said it “supports a strong response by relevant authorities to enforce the law to the fullest extent.”
Demonstrators slept on Scarborough on Saturday night, Greenpeace said in a statement on Sunday. Two protesters set up temporary hanging tents on the platform while two others returned to the Rainbow Warrior vessel, according to Greenpeace.
The pair who stayed on the platform were taken into police custody later on Sunday afternoon, Greenpeace said in an updated statement.
Greenpeace has said that the gas project is a threat to marine ecosystems and will add togreenhouse gas emissions.
The Scarborough project is 98% complete and is on track for its first liquefied natural gas cargo in the fourth quarter, according to Woodside’s website.
