(WO) — Chevron Technical Center has joined the long-term digital subsurface collaboration established by SLB and TotalEnergies, expanding the initiative to include a second global operator in the development of reservoir engineering and geoscience technologies.
The collaboration, known as Arena, was established by SLB and TotalEnergies in 2024 to co-develop scalable digital technologies for subsurface workflows and field development. Chevron will contribute investment, intellectual property and technical expertise to the initiative.
Chevron will bring expertise in uncertainty analysis, optimization and field development planning, helping shape the development roadmap for new digital subsurface technologies.
“This collaboration brings SLB’s digital and subsurface expertise together with operator knowledge to help develop technologies for reservoir engineering and geoscience,” said Rakesh Jaggi, president of SLB’s digital business. “Chevron adds valuable experience and perspectives that will help strengthen how we address complex subsurface workflows and field development decisions.”
Under the collaboration model, subject matter experts from Chevron and TotalEnergies will work within SLB technology centers, bringing operator experience directly into technology development. The companies aim to shorten feedback loops between operators and development teams as they address increasingly complex reservoirs and growing volumes of subsurface data.
Chevron said the collaboration will also incorporate digital technologies and AI-enabled workflows to improve uncertainty analysis and subsurface decision-making.
“Through Arena, we are combining our world-class expertise in uncertainty analysis with digital technologies and AI-enabled workflows to improve decision quality, accelerate insights, and enhance operational efficiency,” said Jitendra Kikani, Chevron vice president of Subsurface.
The three companies previously collaborated on the development of the Intersect reservoir simulator. Arena expands that relationship with a focus on open and extensible technologies for reservoir engineering, geoscience and field development planning.
